| Would you believe it was threatening to rain today! It was a bit overcast and there was a very slight drizzle so I thought I would go to Darling Harbour and visit the Maritime Museum. The boys would love it! You can go round a destroyer, climb down into a submarine and then tour round a replica of Captain Cook's ship, the Endeavour. Then to crown it all there is a Viking ship in the harbour also. I enjoyed the submarine although it was a bit of a squeeze to get through the hatch and then down the ladder. Some of the bunks they slept on are very short although a few were normal length but there was very little headroom. The guide told us some of the sailors had to stick their feet into the cupboards at the end of the bunk in order to get enough leg room to stretch out. We saw the torpedo shafts and then looked through the periscope. Also had a chance to look through the gun sights and it was fun to see they were targeted on the Westfield tower which you can see all over Sydney. Captain Cook's ship was very interesting and there was even less headroom below decks than there was on the submarine. Not even the little kids could stand up straight in the stern where they slung their hammocks. One little boy was quite disappointed to learn that it was not a pirate ship - I think it spoiled his day! |
